Bomb and Gouge being Bomb and Gouge

Bomb and Gouge, the blog of the equipment editors at Golf Digest’s website, are an entertaining duo. They, along with the equipment manufactures, are almost the only ones on the planet who don’t see the increasing problems that technology is creating in the game. Recently, they go after Jack Nicklaus in a cleverly titled “Jack [...]

Tiger-effect never materialized

This article highlights the problems that courses in Connecticut are facing in the over-built golf market.
Like courses all around the country, the Manchester Country Club fell victim to the Tiger Woods effect: Developers began building an overabundance of golf courses in the late 1990s to accommodate a projected boom in golfers. But there weren’t as [...]

Private clubs facing major problems

Not that this is new or shocking, but two articles have appeared over the past day about the problems facing private country clubs. Are “executive” courses the key to golf’s future?

This question arose after reading an article in our local newspaper yesterday about an executive course under construction in Duluth, Georgia. The course is set to open towards the end of summer and will be a 9-hole course - with 18 tees. It also will include a driving range.
[Chip] Randall is … is spending $2.5 [...]

“It’s American golf. It’s entertainment. The fans want to see a car wreck, and that’s what it is.”

Australian golf course architect Michael Clayton made that statement regarding the 17th hole at Sawgrass.
Personally, I find that sad commentary on American golf. For the most part, though, he’s right about the 17th hole summarizing what many Americans’ want out of their golf - ultimate risk and ultimate disaster. Sure, if the participant succeeds, he’s [...]
