Tale of Tiger on the interstate

This story is an amusing tale of OnMilwaukee.com’s Steve Czaban’s encounter with Tiger Woods on the interstate. A little tease to get you interested.
What would happen if I accidentally rear-ended him? Would Stevie Williams pop out of the back like “The Trunk Monkey” and bury a sand wedge square in the middle of my [...]

The Donald makes a comeback on Friday?

According to ABC 30, an offer will be made on Friday for Running Horse, but forgets to mention if it’s golf course architect Donald Trump or somebody else.
Last week, Trump withdrew his $40M offer to purchase Running Horse. Trump wanted to pay $25M in cash and $15M in profits. That deal fizzled out when the [...]

Tiger looking at a military course redo? And a Dubai Update

Tiger Woods must have the most efficient usage of time of any human being. He’s a new father, just hosted his own tournament and is preparing for the season’s final two majors. Well, that’s not all – Geoff Shackelford finds in the Washington Post that Tiger is looking at either building his own course in [...]

Scientists recommend golf courses for wildlife sanctuaries

First, the article.
Golf courses could serve as important wildlife sanctuaries, scientists say.
“There are more than 17,000 golf courses in the United States, and approximately 70 percent of that land is not used for playing,” said Ray Semlitsch, a biologist at University of Missouri-Columbia. “These managed green spaces aren’t surrogates for protected land and ecosystems, [...]

Demon Deacon Palmer to design course for Wolfpack

Arnold Palmer is designing the North Carolina State golf course, which had it’s ceremonial kick off over the weekend.
The 18-hole, 7,025-yard, par-71 public course will be the first university course designed by The Palmer Course Design Company.
It will cost $11.6 million, funded entirely by private donations, and is scheduled to open in spring 2009.
“This is [...]

Crenshaw’s final comments on Whistling Straits

Ben Crenshaw got a second place finish at the US Senior Open at Whistling Straits golf course. He was asked one final question on his thoughts on the golf course.
Q. Where do you think this course ranks? You played them, just about played them all.
BEN CRENSHAW: This is an incredible creation. [...]

Tiger didn’t like the ‘99 version of Carnoustie either

I thought the 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie approached the biggest botched golf course setup in major championship I had ever saw. (That was until Shinnecock in 2004…) Tiger Woods commented on that tournament in the lead up to this year’s Open Championship, which returns to Carnoustie.
“It was hard. It was really hard. I’ve never [...]

New course planned for Virginia

A new, non-real estate private golf course is planned for Roanoke County, Virginia.
The Kinloch principals – golf course architect Lester George and sports agent and amateur great Vinny Giles of Richmond, along course developer Landscapes Unlimited of Lincoln, Neb. – have added name-power with the participation of Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer and financial [...]

That’s why they call him Gentle Ben

An interesting line of questioning directed at Ben Crenshaw after his round at Whistling Straits, site of the US Senior Open.
Q. As an architect yourself when you see a course like this, does that possibly inspire you maybe to?
BEN CRENSHAW: This is a great piece of work. You know, I know a [...]

Herb Kohler and the Strait Talk Express

The US Senior Open is being played this week at Whistling Straits – a course I have a tremendous amount of fascination and respect for. I got my first look at it during the 1999 Club Pro Championship and have been gaga over it ever since. (I have to admit to restraining myself from going [...]
