Texas making it illegal to redevelop a golf course?

A 54-hole Houston golf course complex could be trimmed to 18 holes as soon as next week. Quail Valley Country Club has been losing money - lots of money and the owner is looking to redevelop a portion of the property to hedge his losses. Not so fast, my friend. Texas is looking to make redevelopment of golf courses a very daunting proposition.

Ironically, as Voltmann talked about the country club operations, a new bill sat on Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s desk awaiting his signature, which could force Renaissance Golf Group into a thicket of legal roadblocks and delays if it tries to redevelop golf course land for residential lots or some other use.

House Bill 3232, sponsored by state representatives Dora Olivo, Charlie Howard, John Zerwas, Sylvester Turner and John Davis, and state Sen. Kyle Janek, is specifically intended to apply to the potential redevelopment of Quail Valley Country Club and possibly two or three other courses in the region.
