Canada becoming a hot bed of golf course activity
Golf course construction is supposed to be slowing down, but there are some interesting developments taking place in the Great White North in the last few weeks.
First, Robert Thompson indicates that the man behind Bandon Dunes, Mike Keiser, is looking into investing in Cabot Links. The course is in Inverness, N.S. and, for now, appears to be in the design hands of Canadian architect Rod Whitman. The reason for the “for now” comment is that the project has already been under design by two other architects - Jack Nicklaus and Graham Cooke. This time, it appears that the investors have found their man and that the project will become a reality.
Speaking of Rod Whitman, his affiliate Jeff Mingay has posted some tantalizing pictures on his blog of a spectacular piece of property in Canada that he’s holding in confidence. He also talks about golf on Prince Edward Island and the restoration of Green Gables Golf Course, an old seaside golf course designed by famed Canadian architect Stanley Thompson.
Finally, speaking of Jack Nicklaus, a staggering $650 million dollar project called Wyndansea will bear his signature when it opens next spring. The resort is located Uculelet, British Columbia and recently hosted wealthy potential buyers, bankers and brokers. But the course is not without its controversy.
Not invited were local residents who have criticized developers for breaching buffer zones around a planned municipal trail and a closed municipal dump, and for trespassing onto an adjacent property by as much as 75 metres.
And how about this perk.
The Jack Nicklaus Golf Club of Canada is one of only 25 selected from the family of Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses worldwide to participate in an elite access and reciprocity program. Clubs will have no more than 35 Founding members that pay no membership fees or annual dues for program benefits that include full golf reciprocity, accommodation in a private Nicklaus Home, club amenities and tee times at each Jack Nicklaus Golf Club location.
Photographs of the project, which show a visually stunning piece of property, can be found at the Nicklaus Design website page for the project.
