Bomb and Gouge being Bomb and Gouge

Bomb and Gouge, the blog of the equipment editors at Golf Digest’s website, are an entertaining duo. They, along with the equipment manufactures, are almost the only ones on the planet who don’t see the increasing problems that technology is creating in the game. Recently, they go after Jack Nicklaus in a cleverly titled “Jack being Jack” blog. They’re going after Nicklaus’ recent comments regarding technology.

My favorite thing that they do – beat the bloody pulp out of strawmen. Like when they ask a question, and then get in a fight with themselves answering the question.

What would we fix about the equipment, precisely, Jack? Reduce clubhead size? Wouldn’t get it done because all my understanding of golf club engineering suggests that a smaller clubhead wouldn’t revert to pre-1995 performance levels in terms of on-center hit performance. In other words, they wouldn’t make drivers less hot than they currently are with one major exception.

Anyway, they are a fun read – just take them for what they are, though. And a word of warning – Gouge doesn’t know what a carriage return is.
