More on Sedgefield vs. Forest Oaks

As previously mentioned on this site, the Sedgefield versus Forest Oaks debate is getting hotter. Ed Hardin of the Greensboro News-Record advocates the move in light of the continued success that the Wachovia Championship is enjoying in neighboring Charlotte.

In a way, this is all so hard to understand for us in Greensboro. Everything is so perfect in Charlotte — the course, the clubhouse, the expensive homes surrounding the old hunting preserve. This is what golf is all about, an experience so classic it seems to become unstuck in time.

Except this tournament is only five years old. That’s 62 fewer PGA events than in Greensboro, which will move to the summer this year with a new sponsor and a new hope for operating up against the Wachovia.

I had lamented in the previous article that Davis Love III had not been asked about the potential move given his design firm did the rework on Forest Oaks and he’s the defending champion of the Greensboro tournament. The good news is that he was questioned in this article and he takes a pragmatic approach to the potential move.

“We hope it stays at Forest Oaks,” he said. “Of course, we want what’s best for the tournament. Hopefully, they’ll stay. It’s good for this year.”

“They were real concerned what we thought,” Love said. “I told them to do what’s best for the tournament and the community. The event has a history at Sedgefield, too.”

Hardin says the move is all but cemented and the announcement should occur before this time next year.
